I signed up for Sarah’s 2016 BOM and so far it’s been a blast. Totally out of my comfort zone with the amount of applique, but it is slowly improving. Having the right tools absolutely helps with this. Using 80wt thread certainly does help, I bought a donut of bobbins by Superior Threads and it’s made a huge difference, so smooth and find. So far I’ve not started any of the machine pieced blocks. I’m going for a total scrappy, use as many fabrics/prints as I want kind of look, but all with low volume background hopefully tying it all together! Each month Sarah releases a video with the block/s for the month and they’re super helpful and full of tips relevant to each month, the great thing is you can go back and watch them again and again.
Alternatively if you want to learn Sarah’s techniques for all things handwork, her class on Craftsy, Big Techniques from Small Scraps is absolutely worth the investment. Or you can join the BOM! I’ll be back with more updates as I progress, next up I have 8 wreath blocks to applique.
You can also follow along on my instagram, I’ve created my own hashtag so I can get an overview of finished blocks.
