About making bias tape
If you don't have a set of bias tape makers, you can use a hera marker to make a quarter inch seam allowance from edge long edge and then carefully fold and press each side down, take care not to distort the bias edges when doing this. You could also use pre-made single fold bias, take note of the finished width required for the project that's being sewn when buying pre-made bias tape.
How to make single fold bias tape for applique
The following video shows how to make single fold bias tape, ironing bias on a curve, then attaching and stitching down the bias. Note this video was filmed specifically for the Darling Basket pattern, however the practice of making bias tape and pressing into a curved shapes stands for other projects using single fold bias.
Why use single fold bias tape for stems?
Below is a photo of the difference between single fold and double fold bias binding. Single fold bias tape is used in applique on patchwork projects to reduce bulk and the bias helps with being able to add curves to the placement of the tape before stitching down, watch the video above for how to do this.
Double fold is often used to bind quilts, the open side of the folded binding is stitched to the quilt and then the creased edge is folded over to the back and stitched down. Double fold gives durability to quilt edges. Single fold is often used for curved binding in applique and smaller patchwork projects.
