Stop using English paper piecing papers. Start stamping, cutting and stitching

Love the look of English paper piecing, but not the paper part?

Patchwork stamps let you stamp hexagons (and many other shapes and blocks!) straight onto fabric so you can stamp, cut, and stitch.

Each stamp prints both the sewing line and the cutting line, meaning your seam allowance is already marked and your shapes are ready to cut and sew.

Instead of tracing templates or wrapping fabric around papers, the shape is stamped directly onto fabric and sewn along the marked seam line. Many hand sewists love this paper-free method because it removes the preparation stage and gets you to the stitching faster.

Stamp. Cut. Sew.

Hand sewing happiness.

Why quilters love patchwork stamps

• Faster prep than tracing templates
• No papers to fold, glue, or remove
• Seam allowance is already marked
• Perfect for scrap sewing and small fabric pieces
• Ideal for relaxing hand stitching projects

Patchwork stamps are a simple tool for marking hexagons and other patchwork shapes directly onto fabric. This paper-free EPP method is popular with hand sewists who enjoy portable patchwork projects, scrap sewing, and slow stitching. A hexagon stamp is especially useful for making consistent shapes quickly while still keeping the joy of hand piecing.

Nic's tip

If you love scrap sewing like I do, patchwork stamps are a great way to use those small pieces of fabric we all save. I often stamp a strip of Liberty Tana Lawn or quilting cotton, cut out the hexagons, and keep them in a small pouch ready for hand stitching when I have a quiet moment to work on my long term Nic's Fresh Granny quilt.

Stamp your hexagons straight onto fabric and get to the sewing faster.

How patchwork stamps work

Ink the stamp
Tap the stamp lightly onto a fabric ink pad. A small amount of ink gives the cleanest lines.

Stamp the fabric
Press the stamp firmly onto fabric to print the shape. The stamp prints two lines:
• a solid sewing line
• a dotted cutting line

Cut and sew
Cut along the dotted line and sew along the solid line. Do not sew into the seam allowances so your seams can pivot freely when joining hexagons.

Your seam allowance is already marked, so your shapes are ready to hand piece.

This method removes the need to trace templates or wrap fabric around paper pieces.

FAQ: Patchwork Stamps

What is a patchwork stamp?

A patchwork stamp is a rubber and wood stamp used to print patchwork shapes directly onto fabric. The stamp prints both the sewing line and the cutting line so you can quickly prepare shapes for hand piecing without tracing templates or folding papers.

What lines does the stamp print?

The stamp prints two lines: a solid sewing line and a dotted cutting line. The seam allowance is already marked so your patchwork shapes stay consistent and ready to sew.

Do I still need English paper piecing papers?

No. Patchwork stamps are designed for paper-free EPP or hand piecing. Instead of wrapping fabric around paper templates, the seam line is stamped directly onto the fabric and you sew along that line.

Is this still English Paper Piecing?

The finished patchwork looks the same as traditional EPP hexagons, but the preparation method is different. Instead of paper templates, the seam and cutting lines are stamped onto the fabric and the shapes are hand pieced together.

Is stamping faster than tracing templates?

Yes. Stamping is much faster than basting templates and lets you prepare fabric strips quickly so you can start sewing sooner.

Does stamping waste fabric?

No more than other patchwork cutting methods. You can stamp along fabric strips for efficient cutting or stamp across larger pieces of fabric depending on your preferred workflow. Stamping is also perfect for using up scraps.

What fabric works best with patchwork stamps?

Quilting cotton, lawn, linen blends, and other smooth fabrics work best. Smooth fabrics tend to produce the cleanest stamped lines.

What ink should I use with patchwork stamps?

Use an acid free archival stamp pad designed for fabric or craft stamping. Always test your ink on scrap fabric first to check clarity and behaviour.

Will the stamped lines show in my finished quilt?

The stamped lines sit inside the seam allowance and are usually hidden once the patchwork is sewn together. Always test your ink on scrap fabric first to see how it behaves on your chosen fabric. The ink won't wash out but will fade over time and I haven't experienced any bleeding of ink. Please test an inkpad before making lots of hexagons.

How much ink should I use on the stamp?

Use a light, even layer of ink. Too much ink can make the lines appear thicker than intended.

Can beginners use patchwork stamps?

Yes. Patchwork stamps are very beginner friendly because the seam allowance and cutting lines are already marked. There is no measuring or template tracing required.

Can I use the stamped shapes for machine piecing?

Yes. The stamped sewing line can also be used as a guide for machine piecing.

How do I clean my patchwork stamp?

Clean the stamp with warm soapy water and damp cloth after use. Allow it to dry completely before storing. Do not submerge the stamp in water.

How do I store the stamp?

Store your patchwork stamp in a dry place away from direct sunlight to keep it in good condition.
