Materials You'll Need

Gather these essential tools and materials before starting your Apple Pincushion:

  • Small fabric pieces (3"×6" each; 4 per apple)
  • Felt for leaves
  • Lightweight iron-on interfacing
  • Stuffing (firm for best results)
  • Wood button
  • Strong thread
  • Long needle (doll needle preferred)
  • Leather thong or waxed cord for the stem

The BEST Tip to Make Your Apples Plump and Firm

My top advice for this pattern? Stuff, stuff, stuff! Firmly stuffing your apple ensures it’s easy to use and looks great. Stuff and then squeeze it from top to bottom and check the resistance, if you have a little resistance you're there, if you have little, stuff more!

Another pro tip: use a chopstick or stuffing fork to evenly distribute the filling for a smooth, plump shape.

Step-by-Step Overview

  1. Cut and Prepare: Cut your fabric and felt pieces, iron on interfacing, and trace the templates.
  2. Assemble the Apple: Sew the quarters together, leaving a small gap for the stem.
  3. Stuff and Shape: Turn the fabric right side out, then stuff it firmly for a nice, round apple.
  4. Add Details: Insert the stem, sew the dimples, and attach the button and felt leaves.
  5. Finishing Touches: Knot securely and trim any excess thread for a neat, professional look.

Hey Peggy – You could – I do love hand sewing myself – BUT you do want a strong small stitch to be able to stuff the heck out of them so you get a nice, firm apple pincushion. You could experiment for sure. There is a bit of hand finishing to make the dimples in the apple and close up the bottom and adding the leaves. Hope that helps.

Hello from Texas! This is adorable!! Would I be able to hand sew this together, rather than on a machine? I have a machine, but it just looks like it would lend itself to a lovely bit of hand sewing. Thank you!
